The unique history of Elim Full Gospel Church as a congregation is indeed intriguing. In 1965 Pastor [Dr.] Van Heerden founded Elim Congregation of the Full Gospel Church of God (FCG) in Hatfield Pretoria, with a handful of people. The congregation's first home was in the SOE hall in South Street, Hatfield. Today this hall is a church again, many years after Elim moved out but now it belongs to that specific congregation.

Two years after the founding of Elim Dr. Van Heerden decided to answer the call of the denomination to become the principal of one of the training colleges of the FGC in Cape Town. When he left us, Pastor Lloyd Thomas, a masterful bible teacher, came to Elim and pastored here for some years.

After Pastor Thomas left, Pastor Derrick Barrett took the appointment to Elim. During his pastorate an existing church building in Sunnyside was bought. With the congregation only consisting of about 40 members it was a huge step of faith but a few years after the purchase Pastor Hensie Vroom who followed Pastor Barrett, sold the church after it became too small.

With the money from that sale three stands were bought in Brooklyn. A large purpose built church was erected by Pastor [Dr] Willie Booysen in 1992, who had become the Senior Pastor of Elim at the end of 1990.  His wife, Pastor Olga Booysen, also joined him at that time and she now serves as head of evangelism training (as the minister of evangelism), head of the Elim lady's ministry as well as head of the VIP (over 60's) ministry.

Pastor [Dr] Willie was joined in the ministry by his son, Pastor [Dr.] Conrad, in 2000. Conrad is the current Co-Pastor the congregation and his specific responsibilities include what we call “Young Elim,” with this incorporating the youth and student ministries. Also incorporated in this grouping are the young working and family ministries. Conrad is also the Elim music director as well as the chairman of the Elim Missions Board.  Chantél, Conrad’s wife, is the superintendent of the Sunday School, called 'Kidz@Elim'.

Elim Church has adopted a very strong outreach-centred approach to ministry believing that we need to be relevant to society and community, as this relates to our local, regional, national and international communities. With this in mind, Elim Church has local, regional, national and international projects.
